Can pay online or through Mr. Gibbons or Mr. Parrish.  Student gets [100%-($1 surcharge for each shipment)].  For example, $100 gift card w/12% kickback, student gets $11, plus you save on your purchase. One more order before Christmas!

            • Good Search— http://www.goodsearch.com. Works like Google or Yahoo. Type in Oxford Wildcat Band Boosters. Once you click on verify and you see our name, then perform the search. For every search that you do we receive one penny. Can also do shopping, up to 40%.  $59.82 just went in.

            • Pampered Chef—Done for the year. Made $330.90.

            • Bowl-a-thon—(made about $2,000 last time). Friday, January 16, 2009. $20/person for 2 games. Flyers will be going out soon. $5 of each sign-up goes to student accounts.

            • Little Caesar’s—Currently targeted for January/February, but before Disney trip.

            • Seymour Lake Park Concession Stand—Current inventory, made $404 for the kids during the Flag Football games ($8.40/hr for kids who participated). Overall, quite profitable for the kids.

Directors’ Report:

 J. Gibbons:

--Parade was lovely weather (that’s sarcasm, for anyone who didn’t stand outside in the freezing snow and wind). Band sounded good, considering the weather.

 --Travel Adventures' airfare estimate was low since Feb/March's original number for the Disney trip. There will be 120 people, instead of 150. There’s an increase in airfare, though lower than originally predicted. Went up $74, so it's not too bad. (Kids: $1161+74 =  $1,235). Will have room sign-up for the kids after Christmas break. [There will be two flight times, 2:45 AM at school, leave here about 3:15, airport @ 5:00, flight leaves 7:00, gets to FL around 9:00; 2nd group leaves around 4:45, flight leaves @ 8:40 or so; 2 extra hours on the day they leave; out of Detroit). Spectral Magic Parade. Will be playing Sunday, April 5th at Magic Kingdom, pre-parade at 9:15. All-Star Music Resort. Clinic is the same day as the Magic Kingdom day.

--Uniforms need to be cleaned; will receive directions from shortly.

--Hosting Band Festival on March 6 & 7, 2009. Will need Band Parent HELP (give directions and oversee things; students to be guides from A to B; security in the hallways; Dads & Moms to be equipment crew people; on the stage helping equipment crew set the stage up; also need parents to do concessions). Have talked to head of food service to get it going; There will be more notices and flyers and e-mails in February. Need to pay a food service person, 1.5 time for Saturday, district probably won't reimburse. Probably also have to pay a custodian, possible reimbursement from school. Food for judges, dinner on Friday, breakfast & lunch on Saturday. For both of those times, can get Kalloways or local restaurant to cater; breakfast can be donuts & juice & coffee.

Sandra Walendzik will chair concessions committee. Food can be ordered at-cost thru school.  Possibly up to 40 schools involved. (Probably 16 bands on Saturday & 7 or 8 on Friday).

Field trip: Wicked at Detroit Opera House, tickets, Fri or Sat, $33/$48/upward, December 13, dinner at Hard Rock Cafe, ~$18.

 P. Parrish: Middle school concerts, December 4. Starting on festival music. Past Saturday was Middle School Solo & Ensemble: 10 Is, 12 IIs. Upcoming concert for Symphonic on Monday December 15^th previous to High Sschool Symphonic Band concert, 7:00.

 G. Ashton: Jazz Combo has at least 3 jobs in January: Strategic Planning Committee Meeting, Jan 8th; January 16th at the Bowl-a-Thon; January 23 at Emanuel Church. Still waiting to see about Hard Rock Cafe on a Wed (very much up in the air). 0 hour jazz band has 55 students. Combo's stable at 12. Guitar classes 32 or 35 each. Nice coverage in the Oxford Leader of the Music Theory class.

 A. O’Brien: gearing up for Disney. Finalizing which color guards are going and trying to nail down which songs are going to be played. Considering new cool flags for the handful of color guard going to Disney.

New Biz

--Facilities Steering Committee Report (Fine Arts Task Force): Bond Proposal being considered by School Board to put on Feb 24 ballot, etc. Orchestra room; dedicated art rooms, etc. Meeting is January 8, 2009.

--Joan Kozachic donation will be used to pay for the trailer going to Disney. (ie., defraying the costs of the Disney trip for the band). Gibbons will check with Joan to make sure it's okay.

--Tag Day: $7,093.22 ($11/hr for students). 8 people worked on committee that worked 36 hrs to put that together--THANKS! Quite a success; not as much as in the past, but still pretty successful considering the overall economy.

--Band sweatshirts--still some Smalls & Medoims left. (maybe 6 or so). Suggest doing order forms & getting deadlines. Aim for January.

--Discussed selling oranges, but decided it was a big hassle

(Debit card/cash still works with the card, but the Meijer credit card has some issues that haven’t been resolved yet). They have upped the price for use of the gas card, instead of 5 cents it's 10 cents off the gas.--FYI, this doesn't go to the band, it just saves you money. OCTOBER IS DOUBLE POINTS FOR MEIJER REWARDS!

            • Seymour Lake Park Concession Stand—Contact Laurie Wroblewski,  mrw9@ameritech.net for more information.  The financial breakdown on the concession stand has come to about $7.50/hour for students working it. The season is nearly completed. We are looking to determine how to liquidate remaining stock at the end of the season. J. Gibbons will discuss it w/Mr. Ball. Recognize parks & rec, Laurie will send a letter-to-editor thanking them.

            *bulbs--sold 73 packages, 8 people involved, total of $223, divided between band & involved students. $2.50/package for child and the band will get 50 cents. Band made $40.

            • Tag Day--Sandra, Martha & Nancy are organizing this, more information to come. Marching band kids go in uniforms to spots around town and ask for donations. More information to come. Dates: November 7 (Friday), 3:00-9:00 @ various locations TBA; Nov 8 (Saturday) from 9:00-2:00, locations TBA. Forms are out. Look for them? Also looking for volunteers to help organize. Contact Sandra Walendzik, 248-969-5144 (e-mail: walens01@oxford.k12.mi.us). Need the forms in by October 17. (Typically is a very good fundraiser, $4,000 to $5,000 for the band and several thousand for students).

Tupperware—Potential new fundraiser. More information pending.

Discussed car washes (too large a group) and can collection.

 

Directors’ Report:

 

 J. Gibbons: Last week for Disney Trip registration was the week of October 13th. Travel Adventures' airfare estimate was low since Feb/March's original number. Looks to be $75 -$100 higher than estimated due to fees, baggage check, fuel prices, etc. Hasn't locked in yet and Travel Adventures is trying to work out something. About 116 signed up (original estimate was 150). The fixed-cost portions of the trip is based on 150 people, which is now split over 115, so cost per person goes up. On the upside--probably will be in a Spectral Magic Parade (not locked in yet). (Will be playing Sunday, April 5th at Magic Kingdom). The band will be staying at the All-Star Music Resort.

 

 

--The marching band performed at the Brandon Invitational and looked great, was a positive experience. (Oxford scored higher than any other band on music performance).

 

 

--MSU Parade. Good crowd support.

 

 

--Discussed play-off performances. (News pending)

 

 

Marching Band Concert is October 27th.

 

 

 P. Parrish: The middle school no longer has a 7th or 8th grade band—there are now 3 bands: Symphonic, Concert and Varsity, based on difficulty. All 3 band concerts are October 30.

 

 

 G. Ashton: Jazz Band, numbers for 0 hour--60 kids, give or take. The Jazz Combo is playing Sunday, October 19, 11 A.M. Service, Emmanuel Congregational Church, everyone invited. Jazz Combo has been invited to play at the Detroit Hard Rock Café, date pending.

MSBOA Marching Band Competition

Dear Parents and Students,

The Band Festival on Saturday, October 18 will be held at Vassar High School. The information that you need follows:

9:00 a.m. All students meet at High School

9:15 a.m. All students on field for rehearsal

10:00 a.m. Rehearsal concludes; students begin to load buses.

10:15 a.m. Buses depart for Vassar High School

11:45 a.m. Arrive at Vassar High School

12:30 p.m. Warm-up time

1:00 p.m. Performance time

1:15 p.m. Performance complete, students go to bleachers to watch awards presentation.

1:30 p.m. Presentation of ratings, this involves only the drum majors. Everyone else stays in the bleachers.

1:45 p.m. Load buses and depart for Oxford

3:15 p.m. Arrive back in Oxford

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend to support the band at the festival. Please eat before you show up to leave. There will not be time to get to the concession stand before we perform and there may not be time afterward. The band boosters will provide something to drink and a snack when we arrive at Vassar, providing there is enough time.

SCRIPS FUND RAISER

Hi Fellow Band Parents,

We are going to be placing a Scrip order next Monday, October 6th.  Why don't you give it a try?  Remember, Scrip is just making money on purchases you already make!  You order gift cards from nationally known retailers at face value, and the discount they offer goes right into your band student's account.

If you look through the retailer list, I bet you can find several stores/companies that you already buy from.  Why not save a little money?  Many of our parents buy a few gift cards here and there, and several have paid for band camp that way - it's like having your student go for free!   And if your band student is going to Disney, you could put a little effort into it - use Scrip gift cards for lots of your purchases, for holiday gifts, ask your friends, relatives, co-workers to buy some, use them on a trip - and your savings could really add up!

There are several local retailers: Little Caesar's, Chili's, Starbucks (which can be reloaded online), Goodrich Theatres-Oxford 7, BoRics, Great Clips, AMC Theatres @ Great Lakes Crossing, Burger King, Subway, Dominoes, K Mart, Applebees, Ruby Tuesdays, Blockbuster, Arbys, KFC, Pizza Hut, Wendys....and more depending on what you consider local.

It's Fairly simple to order Scrip gift cards.  All you do is:
1. Go to www.shopwithscrip.com and order. You'll need our code (711E5L7F13162) to register for the first time.  Order whatever cards you want.
2. Send in a check made out to Oxford Band Scrip in with your band student and make sure it gets to Mr. Gibbons on Monday.
3. Your band student will bring the gift cards home on Friday.

Or, there's a much easier online way to pay, called "Prestopay".

PrestoPay™ is NOT a credit card based system - it's better. PrestoPay™ uses the safe, reliable NACHA electronic fund transfer system. Families enter their checking account information one time in a secure environment. After the account is verified, families can choose to have their scrip payments electronically deducted from their checking accounts when they order.  The system is safe, secure and convenient - and your student doesn't have to worry about remembering to turn in your check!

There is an option to sign up with Prestopay at www.shopwithscrip.com.  It takes a few days to verify your bank account, so you'll need to sign up a week or so before you want to use it. It makes things much easier for all of us!

We plan to order Scrip about every other week, so you can do a little at a time, if you want. The orders are due on Mondays, and you will get your gift cards sent home with your band student on Fridays. Please make sure your band student turns in your check to Mr. Gibbons on Monday.  We cannot release your order unless it is paid.

There's a nice, cascading card file in 'extra stuff' that works well for carrying the gift cards.  Plus there are gift card wrappers, if you give them as gifts. 

Here's an unsolicited testimonial from a band parent who orders scrip.

Parents, I paid my daughter's ENTIRE band camp fee solely through Scrip proceeds from the past year. OHS Marching Band Sweatshirts

Get your cool "Oxford Wildcat Marching Band" blue hooded sweatshirt before they're all gone!  Great for kids, parents, or anyone who wants to show their support.  (You'll want to wear it at the Homecoming parade as the band marches by.)  Just send in $20 (cash or check) with your student and make sure they know what size you want. We have S,M, L, & XL in stock, and we're getting more smalls and XXL next week..

Two photographers have been shooting photos of the Oxford High School Wildcat Marching Band and made them available for viewing and purchase on the Web.

2. The photographer that took pictures at the first game took
them again last Friday and has those pictures available to look at on

            • Tag Day--Sandra, Martha & Nancy are organizing this, more information to come. Marching band kids go in uniforms to spots around town and ask for donations. More information to come. Dates: November 7 (Friday), 3:00-9:00 @ various locations TBA; Nov 8 (Saturday) from 9:00-2:00, locations TBA. Sign-up will come.

Directors’ Report:

 J. Gibbons: Thanks re. band uniform assistance. Pleased with band performance and is receiving positive feedback from the community. Next big event, September 27, Brandon Marching Band Invitational--new thing, competition. (Scholastic competition). Warm-up 5:15. Meet after lunch (~1:00-1:30, TBA, take bus over to Brandon, ready to perform at 6:00. Ends at 7:15, scores announced afterward, come home. Expect to be home 8:00-8:30.) Official start is 4:00. More info to come.

 

October 3--MSU Homecoming Parade in East Lansing. MSU Alumni Association is going to pay for the buses. More details to come.

 

Field trip: Wicked at Detroit Opera House, tickets, Fri or Sat, $33/$48/upward, December 13, dinner at Hard Rock Cafe, ~$18. TBA, first come, first serve.

 P. Parrish: The middle school bands are getting new music stands; received anonymous donation to pay for them. The middle school no longer has a 7th or 8th grade band—there are now 3 bands: Symphonic, Concert and Varsity, based on difficulty. 1st scheduled concert is 28th of October, probably going to change--stay tuned! Symphonic Band concert is October 30. (Concert and Varsity band concerts are pending).

 G. Ashton: Jazz Band, numbers for 0 hour--60 kids, give or take. The Jazz Combo has already played for teachers opening day on Aug 27, and are also playing Saturday, September 13, 4:30-5:30, Emmanuel Congregational Church, everyone invited. There are 32 kids in music theory & composition. (This is currently a 1-trimester class, but he is working on building it into a full year, etc). There are 6 sections of guitar, 150 kids spread over the year. Numbers are great. Goals: some plans for Music Theory Advanced Placement (AP) in the future (independent study) for college credit. Hoping to have Jazz Combo as a regular class, but nothing settled on it. Jazz Combo has been invited to play at the Detroit Hard Rock Café, date pending.

 A. O’Brien: 19 students in the color guard, going good. Received a lot of compliments. New uniforms haven't shown up yet, but soon with any luck. Late delivery for next week at latest. Locks for the storage performance room are needed because some of the flags seem to be missing--2 blue, 1 white (new). Anybody who has found a blue or white flag, please return to the band room!

∆ We are working on finding sweatshirts to sell for the band, potentially selling and marketing to the parents.

Treasurer’s Report:

• Current Band Booster Bank Balance is $22,752.22, however, $4,697 of that is recent money from incoming Band Camp fees.

• There were two recent anonymous deposits, one for $364 and one for $45. Anyone with information regarding these deposits, please contact Treasurer Kathy Penley, kathdave@flash.net.

• To-date, the Seymour Lake Park concession stand has brought in $1,462.

• Parents or students interested in copies of their student band account balances can contact Kathleen Penley, kathdave@flash.net.

• If you want money in the student account to go directly to the Disney Trip expenses, inform Kathleen Penley and she will take care of the transaction.

            • Clean-up was done by several band members at the Oakland County Fair at about $250 per day. This may become a regular fundraiser. Further events will be announced.

            • Golf Outing: This is fast approaching. Please pay special attention!

                        ∆ Due to the impending sale and remodeling of Patterson’s Pharmacy, there will be no window advertising.

                        ∆ There will be an article in the Oxford Leader.

                        ∆ There are currently 11 volunteers, which is adequate, but more are certainly welcome!

                        ∆ To-date there is 1 beverage cart and 1 hole sponsor; we’re looking for more!

                        ∆ The Golf Outing is scheduled for August 24, 2008. Tee-off time is 1:00. If you do not golf, you are welcome to come to the dinner. In addition, the driving range and putting green will be open prior to tee-off time. There will be a raffle—one of the prizes is a baseball signed by Magglio Ordonez!  A. O’Brien: The color guard is rehearsing three times a week and currently has 19 to 20 people signed up. They Band Boosters approved the purchase of 6 to 7 new uniforms for the color guard and agreed that a mix of colors, ie., green and purple, would be excellent.

 

SPECIAL NOTES

§ They are still looking for chaperones for Marching Band Camp! If parents don’t volunteer, recent alumni may be brought in (thought that might scare you into volunteering).

§ A special thank you to Joan Kozachik, who donated $1000 to the Band Boosters. Thank you! It will probably be used for scholarships to camp or to Disney World, but has not been determined yet.

§ We are looking for a sponsor to donate or purchase high-quality garment bags (preferably with OHS MARCHING BAND stenciled on them with an advertiser’s logo) for the Marching Band to use.

§ An alternate supplier for Marching Band shoes has been found. For more information, contact: Lori Bosetti, Loriebeast@aol.com.

§IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION: The Disney World Trip is available to any interested band members willing to don the marching band uniform and march in the parade. You do not have to be in the Marching Band to be eligible! But in order to go, you have to sign up for it!!!
